This post will outline some of the best chess players of all times. It may not match your ratings, but these people have carved a niche for themselves in the chess industry.

Jose Capablanca

Jose Capablanca was born in 1888, and he died in 1942. Many people will agree that he was the most significant chess player of all time. He is famous for his positional play and endgame skills. Not just that, he was also nicknamed ‘The Human Chess Machine’ because of his prowess and simple style of playing the game. He won the Chess World Championship Awards from 191 to 1927.

Bobby Fischer

Bobby Fischer was born in 1943, and he died in 2008. He was known as one of the greatest chess players and is known for his crazy playing skills. Besides that, he was an expert in every aspect of the game, especially in technical play. He beat Taimanov6-0 in a game. He also defeated Larsen too in a 6-0 match. He held the Chess World Championship title from 1972 to 1975.

Garry Kasparov

Garry Kasparov was born in 1963. He is best known as an attack chess player. He is one of the best chess players of all times. He is also known for his defense playing skills. He held the Chess World Championship title from 1985 to 2000.

Emmanuel Lasker

Emmanuel Lasker was born in 1868 and died in 1941. He was an expert in all aspects of the game of chess, most especially in endgames. He is known the person to hold the Chess World Championship position for the longest time. He held the position for 27 years that is from 1894 to 1921.

Paul Morphy

Paul Morphy was born in 1883 and died in 1884. He was the first player to introduce the positional skill which most players use now. Chess games played before the Morphy’s time was known to play attack. He was not an official Chess World Champion because the championship was not in existence at his time.


Alexander Alekhine

Alexander Alekhine was born in 1892 and died in 1946. He is known as one of the best chess tacticians ever lived. He had a great attack skill. He was not just an attacker; he was also known as a positional player. He was the Chess World Champion from 1927 to 1935, also from 1937 to 1946.

Anatoly Botvinnik

Anatoly Karpov was born in 1951.  He is a high positional and endgame play. He also held the Chess World Championship position for a long time; from 1975 to 1985 and from 1993 to 1999.

Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen was born in 1990, and he can rightly be said to be the best chess player in our era. He has held the position as the World Champion since 2013.
